サイト・ワードって何？その2 DolchとFryと語彙力アップ - お安く子ども英語！~English On A Budget~

サイト・ワード・リストの中でよく知られているDolch Word List（ドルチ・ワード・リスト）とFry Word List（フライ・ワード・リスト）。ワード・リストはフォニックスの例外単語の学習にとどまらずその後の語彙力アップにも使えておススメ、というお話です。

Dolch Word List（ドルチ・ワード・リスト）

Dolch Word Listは、エドワード・ドルチ博士により1930年代に作られたサイト・ワード・リストの元祖です。このリストは、名詞を除外した220の単語で構成され、Dolch 220 Listと呼ばれています。ドルチ博士は、Dolch Noun Listとして95の名詞のリストも作っていますが、サイト・ワードとして覚えることは推奨していません。Dolch 220 Listに含まれている、is、andといった単語は、本の内容にかかわらず頻繁に出てきますが、名詞は読んでいる本や文書の内容に大きく左右されるから、というのが理由です。ドルチ博士の名詞リストの中には、Santa Clausといった単語もあるのですが、確かにクリスマスの本以外にはふつう出てこないですよね。ドルチ博士は、当時の子ども用の本（幼稚園～小学低学年）などに使われている単語をもとにリストを作ったのですが、一般的な英語の文書の50～75％がこのリストの単語によって構成されていると言われています。このリストさえ覚えれば、半分以上の単語はパッと見たらわかる！すごい！ネイティブの場合、このリストは幼稚園～小学校低学年に覚えることが推奨されているそうなのですが、、、

と思って調べてみたのですが、実際今でも使用されていて、充分な内容なのだそうです。ドルチ博士、すごいね。

Fry Word List（フライ・ワード・リスト）

エドワード・フライ博士は、Dolch Word Listを発展させて、3年生～9年生（日本でいうと中学3年）用の本などに使用されている単語をもとに1950年代（その後1980年代に改編）にFry Word Listを作りました。名詞を除外することなく、頻出する単語を1000語選択し、大きく100語ずつのグループに分けました。このグループは、最頻出の100語から順に、Fry 100 List、Fry 200 List・・・と呼ばれています。英語の文書の90％は、このリストの単語で占められるといわれています。9割！ほぼほぼ読めちゃうんじゃない！？って感じますよね。1000語というのは、多いな～とは思いますが・・・

さて、ネイティブの場合、

1年生までに最初の100語（Fry 100 List）をマスター

2年生までに次の100語（Fry 200 List）をマスター

3年生までに次の100語（Fry 300 List）をマスター

4～5年生で残りの700語をマスター ←多いな！1年で350語、3倍以上に増えてる・・・

することが推奨されています。

私がFly Word Listに決めた理由

Dolch Word ListとFry Word Listにリストされている単語は異なります。例えば、最頻出の100語を比較した場合、どちらのリストにも出てくるのは70語、片方のリストにしか出てこない単語が30語ずつあります。Fry Listの最初の100語のうち、Dolch 220 ListとDolch Noun Listのどちらにも出てこない単語は9語（each、more、number、other、part、people、than、way、word）となっています。どちらのリストを使用したとしても、よく出てくる単語を学習して、見たらすぐにパッとわかる！レベルに習熟することでリーディングの力がつくことに違いはありません。

私がFry Word Listにしようと思ったのは、よく出てくるのにフォニックスのルールでは取りこぼされてしまう、という例外単語をカバーするだけでなく、リストを学習していくことで、

フォニックス

フォニックスの例外＆頻出重要単語（100～300語）

↓

さらなる語彙力アップ（400～1000語）

と自然に移行できるのでは、と考えたからです。

フォニックスのルールを一通り学習し終えて浮かれたりしておりましたが、全米リーディング委員会の見解にも示されているとおり、

フォニックスは読み方を習い始める段階での学習の一部に過ぎず、習熟度、語彙、読解力を高める指導も重要です。

ということですから、次は、習熟度や語彙の強化に進んでいく必要があるわけです。
